British telecommunications provider Virgin Media, owned by Liberty Global, will test the secondary use of their cabinets to use the infrastructure for charging electric vehicles. If the tests are successful, thousands of charging stations can appear in the UK.
Six distribution cabinets that are located on the streets of England, will be converted as part of the testing phase. If the concept proves successful, approximately 40 000 street boxes across the UK can greatly increase the capabilities of electric vehicle charging.
In Germany, Deutsche Telekom launched a similar project, using a 12 000 private distribution cabinets, which will be successively modernized. At that time, in Germany the process is already underway, testing in the UK should begin this week with the support from the startup Connected Curb. Testing will be completed 3 months after the accounting conversion is also planned in Belgium.
